This Earth Day, we’re recommitting to our promise to plant one million trees by 2025. We’re dissatisfied with carbon neutral and are targeting carbon negative! Along the way, we’re making decarbonization through reforestation accessible and convenient for everyone. Follow our journey or better yet, join us!

You know the proverb, “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” When it comes to environmental sustainability, we need to go far and we need to go quickly. This Earth Day, we are recommitting ourselves to our promise to plant one million trees by 2025. On our journey, we’ve partnered with amazing organizations that are leading the charge from the ground up (literally) to a more sustainable future. In addition, we are bringing along as many forward-thinking consumers and businesses as possible, weaving meaningful sustainability seamlessly and frictionlessly into the trillions of payment transactions that happen every day. We aren’t just eliminating paper waste, we’re reforesting as we go.

Where are we today?

Over the past 12 months, we have planted more than 120,000 trees (and counting) or a rough average of 10,000 trees per month. At that rate, it will take us eight years to reach our goal! Luckily, we’ve significantly accelerated our efforts in the past months and are collaborating with an increasing number of expert partners that have supercharged our reforestation efforts. But our real momentum comes from bringing others on this journey with us. In fact, we plant trees for every individual and business that registers to our platform. This way, as our community and business grow, we are able to go further, faster.

From tech to planting, our reforestation partners lead the charge

Our aim is to reforest on every continent and we’re a good way there. In North America, we have planted 5,000 magnificent Sequoia trees in California’s Sequoia National Forest through American Forests, who have been restoring forests for more than 140 years. Sequoia trees supply, filter and regulate water through the year. Around 83.82 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are stored within the Sequoia National Forest, which, by the way, is equivalent to more than 18 million gas-powered passenger vehicles driven for an entire year 🚗

On the African continent, we’ve partnered with Ecologi to plant 100,000 mangrove trees in Kenya, Uganda and Madagascar. These geotagged trees greatly contribute to sustaining unique plant and wildlife environments. Ecologi is an environmental subscription service that empowers consumers and businesses to offset their carbon footprint by contributing an amount of their choosing to reforestation and other sustainability initiatives.

In Central America and Asia, we partnered with Veritree to plant 15,000 trees that will revitalize local ecosystems and act as a foothold for expanding our reforestation efforts into more countries. Veritree is a data-driven platform that connects sustainably driven companies with climate solutions that are verified by blockchain technology for greater transparency and trust.

We are technologists at heart and love to collaborate with other companies leveraging both existing and next-gen technologies to solve for environmental sustainability in new ways! Planet Possible is one such partner, providing users with tools to access action and advocacy opportunities from their smartphones. Through Planet Possible we will be advocating for large-scale retailers to adopt digital and eliminate the use of paper receipts. Imagine the environmental impact of migrating every single CVS receipt online🤯

Today and every day, we’re striving for a cleaner planet. A big thank you to our partners and our community. Together, let’s go!

Participation is critical for change. We educate both consumers and merchants on the environmental impact and carbon footprint that paper receipts create.
